According to the tech giant, Halo 4 will be available from November 6th, marking the return of the heroic Master Chief - a character named by Fast Company as one of the most popular in videogame history.

The new release will be set four years after the events of Halo 3, with Master Chief facing down an "ancient evil" that threatens to destroy the universe.

Since its introduction in 2001, the Halo series has achieved 40 million game sales and inspired everything from novels to action figures.

Phil Spencer, corporate vice president of Microsoft Studios, said: "We are beginning a new saga with Halo 4 and embarking on a journey that will encompass the next decade of Halo games and experiences."

A small amount of footage from the forthcoming title has been unveiled in a YouTube skit featuring US talkshow host Conan O'Brien.
