Games Consoles

Video games systems continue to improve in leaps and bounds. Gone are the blocky graphics and sluggish gameplay of the earlier days of video gaming; today’s games are vivid explosions of colours and sounds that were, literally, impossible to imagine a few years ago.

Nintendo Wii

Over the last five years the Nintendo Wii has held an almost unassailable position ahead of its rivals in the console wars.

For most of the 2000s games consoles from Sony (PlayStation2) and Microsoft (Xbox) led the way. All that changed at the end of 2006 when Nintendo unleashed the Wii on the world.

Many people had incorrectly written off the prospects of the Nintendo Wii before it even came out. It wasn’t nearly as powerful as the xbox360 or PS3 and did not have the ability to play DVDs.

What they hadn’t counted on was Nintendo’s game changing control interface. Instead of sitting motionless in front of the TV with a gamepad in hand the Nintendo Wii encouraged players to get up out of their seats. Wii games were, and still are, controlled by waving a Wii remote around to simulate the actions of the onscreen characters.

The earliest Wii bundles to hit the shops included the fantastic Wii Sports. Players could enjoy great simulations of tennis, golf, bowling, baseball and even boxing with this great game.

Super Mario Galaxy was another early hit. This was a return to the platform glory of Nintendo's earliest hits from the 1980s, albeit one with the lush 3D spin it first introduced for Mario on the Nintendo 64.

Nintendo also cleverly entices players in by drawing upon their previous successes. The Wii is Nintendo's first backwards-compatible console.

Wii owners can use their old GameCude gmes and controllers with their new Wii consoles. And great games from all of Nintendo’s previous consoles can be downloaded from the Wii shopping channel.

Newer games such as the fantastic Mario Kart Wii can be played by uop to 4 players at home, or with up to a dozen players from around the world thanks to the free online gamelpay option.

There are rumours of a Nintendo Wii 2 being released in the coming years. And you can be sure that as soon as it is released Hot Deals will have details of the best bundles, offers and deals.

Other top selling games for the Nintendo Wii include Donkey Kong Country, Super Mario Galaxy 2, New Super Mario Bros., Wii Fit Plus, GoldenEye, Wii Party, Just Dance, Super Smash Bros., Lego Star Wars, Lego Batman and Lego Harry Potter.

Xbox 360

Released in 2005 the Xbox 360 was the successor to Microsoft's first console, the much-loved Xbox.

Xbox 360 games are much more advanced in terms of picture quality and speed than those for the Wii. Indeed, the demographic of fans for the Xbox 360 (and, for that matter, Sony’s PS3) skews much older than the demographic of the Wii.

The game that really ignited interest in the Xbox 360 was Halo 3. This first-person shooter was the third instalment in the exclusive-to-Xbox Halo series and let players control the Master Chief character as he obliterates a host of evil nasties across a range of exciting and realistic levels.

Racing and combat games are also a real favourite on the Xbox 360, especially those that, like Halo3, can be played online against hordes of other players from across the globe.

Popular Xbox 360 games include Fallout: New Vegas, Call of Duty: Black Ops, Dead Space 2, Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, Fable 3, Red Dead Redemption, Grand Theft Auto IV and Mass Effect.

Nowadays the most popular Xbox bundles feature either the latest game in the Halo series, Halo: Reach, or the excellent Kinect For Xbox sensor.

Recently interest in the Xbox 360 has been reignited by the release of the Xbox Kinect.

With Kinect for Xbox players can control games with the movements of their own bodies. Revolutionarily no control has to be held or waved and no button has to be pressed.

Instead the Xbox Kinect sensor bar is placed atop the TV screen. It uses special sensors to carefully monitor your every move. Sports games have proven the most popular since the device was launched and it is easy to see why.

In the first two months of release Microsoft sold an incredible 8,000,000 units of the Xbox Kinect. And as more and more titles become available for the Kinect this figure will skyrocket.

Sony surprised a lot of people when they joined the console wars in 1994 with the original PlayStation.

This was followed in 2000 by the PS2. With this new PlayStation came a quantum leap in graphics quality and a slew of new games. Cleverly this console was backwards compatible with the original PlayStation which meant that upgrading didn’t mean having to dump all of your old games.

The PS3 was launched in 2006 and while it was not as big a hit as Nintendo’s revolutionary Wii console it is still a seriously great bit of kit.

One of the things that really sets the PS3 apart from the Xbox 360 and the Wii is in its ability to play high definition blu-ray discs.

This makes the PS3 the logical choice for people who want more from a console than just a games system.

Top selling games for the PS3 include LittleBigPlanet 2, Gran Turismo 5 (GT5), Call of Duty: Black Ops, Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood and FIFA 11.

PlayStation Move

In September 2010 Sony joined the motion control console wars with the PlayStation.

The PS3 Move system is very similar in execution to the Wii remotes. Players wave a wand-like controller to control the action on screen. Many PS3 bundles now include the PlayStation Move.
