Tough times ahead for electricals market, experts claim
The sector's "golden age" has come to an end.

The electrical goods market will struggle in 2011 as the "golden age" of new product launches comes to an end, an independent retail analyst has predicted.

Verdict said the market will fall by £2.2 billion by the end of the year, compared with the level of sales generated in 2007.

Electricals vendors are expected to see their performance contract by 0.9 per cent over the coming months, in contrast to the retail sector as a whole, which will grow two per cent.

Senior analyst at Verdict Matt Piner claimed there has been a "drought in new technology" following the release of the Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii consoles, flatscreen TVs, digital cameras and laptops in recent years.

"In comparison to the last few decades, there is undeniably less for consumers and retailers to get really excited about," he added.

The study comes after Kesa, the owner of major electricals chain Comet, revealed like-for-like sales fell 7.3 per cent in the period from November 1st to January 18th.
