Debenhams has reported substantial gains in its market share for men's, women's and children's clothing in recent months.
In the 19 weeks ending January 8th 2011, the department store chain's control of the menswear market rose by 30 points, according to the Kantar Worldpanel Fashion report, while kids' and ladies' clothing increased by 20 points and ten points respectively.
This helped the Debenhams group's like-for-like sales over the period rise by 0.3 per cent including VAT, while the company's overall gross transaction value was up 4.2 per cent.
Chief executive Rob Templeman expressed his satisfaction at the results, describing them as "pleasing", especially given the adverse weather that struck the UK in December.
"I am particularly pleased that our market share in women's clothing has begun to demonstrate growth," he added.
Meanwhile, rival retailer House of Fraser saw its sales rise 8.5 per cent in the five weeks to January 8th, with chairman Don McCarthy stating the company is "well-placed" to enjoy further growth throughout 2011.
